Necessary?: Until we get something better from Apple Records, this is the "Holy Grail" set of missing songs from the unreleased No Dice and Straight Up sessions. The sound quality of all of these songs is on par with the bonus tracks released on both the No Dice and Straight Up CDs - And that is a good thing!

That being said, eight of the songs on this CD are already available as the bonus tracks of No Dice and Straight Up CD releases. So the real benefit of this release is for the five unreleased Apple tracks. And all of those tracks are clean, nicely equalized and sound fantastic!

This is a BWR Pick - a 'Core Collection' addition for Badƒinger fans.

  6. Sweet Tuesday Morning (Molland) 2:52
  7. Dreams Of Thunder (Molland) 3:47
  8. Interview: concludes 1:30

Necessary?: Interesting combination of a well recorded 1994 Joey concert and 1993 Kevin Matthews radio interview interspersed with a few off-the-cuff performances by Joey and Fred Jack.

The concert 3 piece band sounds great, but Joey's voice is strained, especially on the non-Joey songs. But the Chicago radio interview is interesting and Joey's 'unplugged' songs make it worth the while finding this CD.

Interesting note: The two photos and Joey's 'letter to the fans' used on this CD were lifted from photos that used to be posted on Randy Justesen's Badƒinger Web site.

Live in Japan 1991

Released: 2000
Label: Brilliant Road
Label Number: BRD010/11 (2 CDs)

Overall Rating: 3 ƒingers
Recording Quality: Fair
Source: Audience Tape(s)
Package: Jewel Case & Numbered Slipcase
Insert: 4 Color, 4 page cover

Necessary?: On February 8th, 1991, Joey, accompanied by Mike Lichey, A.J. Nicholas, newly recruited drummer, John Richardson, and Big Dean, the roadie, arrived in Japan for a series of shows. It was the first time Joey performed there since 1968, when he was with Gary Walker and the Rain. The next day, a press conference was scheduled, followed on the next four days by concerts in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, for a total of seven shows. The local promotion was first class all the way: tour shirts, sporting the nail-in-finger Magic Christian logo, as well as a deluxe, full color program (in Japanese!) with complete history and discography, which were sold at the shows. The tour, ostensibly to promote the Japanese release of the live Day After Day, coincided with the limited edition release of the picture-cd version.

Note*: Philadelphia, December 1970 or Ungano's Club, NYC, November 25, 1970? The date and place of origin of this soundboard tape is still unknown, but is thought to be the second set played that night at the Ungano's Club in New York City.

Necessary?: At the time of its release, the complete Head First recordings were not available in a licensed format in any form except for a few songs on the Rhino Best of Badƒinger II. This package offered a copy of both the rough Apple mix, and for the first time, the more polished Warner Bros. mix. For that reason, it is worth seeking out.

For superior sound quality of this album, purchase the double CD, Snapper Music licensed release.

Badƒinger ~ Alive

Released: 1999

Label Number: BRD004/5 (2 CDs)

Overall Rating: 3 ƒingers
Recording Quality: Fair
Source: Audience Tape(s)
Package: Jewel Case & Numbered Slipcase
Insert: 4 Color/Black, 4 page cover

Necessary?: Badƒinger's 6th and final, U.S. tour... Two new albums were released within a few months of each other. Ass on Apple Records and Badƒinger on Warner Brothers Records. Pete's last stage appearance in the U.S. would take place in less than a week after the Cambridge show, in Chicago.

Since these recordings are audience tapes, the quality is average, but quite listenable. The guitars are way forward, the vocals are somewhere in the middle and Mike on drums is almost non-existant. Too bad, because these were both excellent shows with the band in good form - blistering, I might add.

One funny bit is when after Day After Day, Tommy introduces the next song as written by George Washington - Constitution...

Necessary?: (From the liner notes) The Walker Brothers story has been well documented over the years though not much has been said of Gary Walker's little known band that formed after the break up of The Walker Brothers in 1967. Gary Walker (real name Gary Leeds) began releasing solo records in '66 while still a member of The Walker Brothers. When the Walkers stopped in spring of '67 due to boredom with their teenybopper status, Gary formed Gary Walker and The Rain in the fall of '67.

The group consisted of: Paul Crane (lead vocals/rhythm guitars/piano) formally of Paul and Ritchie and the Cryin' Shames, John Lawson (bass) formally of the pre-Plastic. Penny group The Universals, Joey Molland (lead guitar/vocals) who had a previous single with The Masterminds, and finally Gary Walker on drums.

Although Gary never played drums on any of the Walker Brothers recordings due to a contract dispute, he was finally allowed to play drums on the Rain's material. Not the world's flashiest mod drummer, Gary kept a very straightforward beat with some interesting snare-rolls and flam action.

By the first single Spooky was released on Polydor in early '68, Japanese Philips demanded an entire LP for the multitude of Walker Brothers fans desperate for any Walker-related product. An album was assembled and released only in Japan as well as an EP and two singles taken from the album. Due to poor sales, the Rain were dropped by the end of '68 and they managed to record one last single for British Philips - an Easybeats song, before breaking up in early '69. Gary Walker left the music business, Paul Crane became a producer, John Lawson joined the post Honeybus group, Lace, whilst Joey Molland joined Badƒinger in 1969.

The Iveys ~ Someday We'll Be Known (1968 demo tapes)

Released: MCMXCV (1995)
Label: Spank Records
Label Number: Spank 142 (146)

Overall Rating: 4 ƒingers
Recording Quality: Good
Source: One demo tape out of many that
  were made by IVEYS
Package: Jewel Case with Insert

Tracks:
1-24: Demo tape - early 1968

30: Wall's Ice Cream Apple EP -1969
31: From Apple LP (Sapcor 8) - 1969

Necessary?: (From the liner notes) As the story goes, The Iveys made a lot of demo tapes in an attempt to get a record contract on the merits of their songwriting. Having turned down some offers because they weren't allowed to record all their own compositions, Apple Records finally gave them a chance to record their own songs. In an attempt to write a "hit" song, The Iveys kept on writing and writing. Only one song, "Maybe Tomorrow" came close to being a hit, while most of the others have been long since forgotten, but now one such tape has been saved from obscurity. It's a good thing, because many songs are better than most of their debut album, "Maybe Tomorrow".

Badƒinger ~ Timeless

Released: 1995
Label: Planet Records
Label Number: #0871-27

Overall Rating: 3 ƒingers
Recording Quality: Fair to Good
Source: Concert, Demos, TV
Package: Jewel Case & Insert

Necessary?: Someday is a neat little boogie number. It's a Delaney & Bonnie cover. Joey's playing lead on it, and about mid-way through, he switches to a faster, (double note) playing lead on it. From the liner notes, it was from a '69 BBC TV show, apparently not long after Joey joined. One of my favorite, obscure live numbers by the band!

The CD graphics show the twisted side of bootlegs - "Hangman" as the title...

Note*: Philadelphia, December 1970 or Ungano's Club, NYC, November 25, 1970? The date and place of origin of this soundboard tape is still unknown, but is thought to be the second set played that night at the Ungano's Club in New York City.

Also, a better and more complete concert recording is featured on the Brilliant Road Kickin' Ass CD reviewed [ HERE ].

Necessary?: Several problems with this CD. This is the same, but much abbreviated set of BBC shows that were "officially" released in 1997 (first, by Strange Fruit). Also this bootleg CD has the dates listed as 1970 & 1971, when the actual dates are from live concerts held in the Paris Theatre, London, in 1972 and 1973. I am also not sure why this CD has two photos of the Iveys, as this is a Badƒinger set of live concerts. All that being said, at least this was available 6 years before the "official" release.      What's Good

  • Personal ownership of Bootlegs is legal or semi-legal
  • Unreleased, uncredited, impossible to find commercially - Bootlegs fill in historical gaps for fans
  • Bootlegs can generate additional interest and legitimate sales for the artist(s)

    What's Bad

  • Bootlegging is neither legal nor ethical
  • Selling Bootlegs or Pirated recordings is illegal
  • Bootleg recordings are usually not up to the artist's or consumer's quality standards
  • Bootlegs can be expensive, of inferior quality and not well documented
  • Supporting a Bootlegger or Pirate does not rightfully help the artist(s) financially

    Why is this page Necessary

  • To document what has been, or still is, available to the public
  • Badƒingerlinks.com does not encourage the practice of producing and distributing bootlegs or pirated recordings
  • Badƒingerlinks.com is not affiliated with any bootlegger or pirate
