Since then we've had many of these tracks released as bonus tracks on the CD reissues of both "No Dice", "Straight Up", and the "Best Of Badfinger" as well as incremental upgrades on may other bootlegs. So why then do we need this 2003 bootleg, "Badfinger - Apple Demos 1970-1972"? Well, I'll get to that..... First of all let us all be clear that these are not demos. This is a stereo mix of the album Badfinger submitted to Apple in 1971. A hasty mix was done before the band went on one of their many US tours. Apple rejected the album, and like kids who did a sloppy job on their chores Badfinger were told to 'do them again'. That's how we got the officially released "Straight Up" album late 1971 (or early 1972 depending on where you lived). A fresh listen brings a question to mind. Were Apple right to reject this initial album? I am now thinking 'Yes, they were'. Sure, there are some excellent songs and performances here, namely "Name Of The Game", "Baby Please", "Sweet Tuesday Morning", "I'll Be The One", "Suitcase" and "Loving You" being the standouts. But the rest of the album either lacks direction ("Money", "Mean Mean Jemima") or appears half finished ("No Good At All", "Perfection", "Sing For The Song"). This would be a problem Badfinger would encounter on too many of their albums ("Ass", "Badfinger" being two other prime examples). The album plods along, and as a whole it doesn't deliver the goods despite the excellent sound on this release. Some might say that this album reflects the true nature of the band. That's true if you consider Badfinger primarily as a live act. This would have been an album that would have translated well on stage. In short, to my ears these songs we (as collectors) know so well are presented here in best ever quality. No information is provided with the disc, so how the mix differs to the "No Dice"/"Straight Up" bonus tracks is something I have not taken the time to analyse. This is however a great sounding recording that appears not to have suffered from horrendous noise reduction or fidelity loss from being passed from collector to collector. Being five years old now, this disc is probably no longer available except through trading circles such as Bootlegzone or The Traders Den. It is worth tracking it down if you can get it. ¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤ Copyright İ Badfinger Web Ring / Badfingerlinks.com.
