For most folk the original release of a particular album, (as long it is on CD) is normally enough. A case in point are the recent Lennon reissues that Yoko Ono has released. These added little to the 'Lennon legend' but offered an opportunity to cash in, (oops, I mean get the music to the fans). In Badfinger's case we had an alternate mix CD release, (albeit a bootleg) released twelve months prior to the official Snapper Music version in 2000. The Snapper Music version is source from the original studio mix, (recorded at Apple in 1975). The Brilliant Road bootleg version of the Apple mix is featured in poor quality (albeit complete). The Snapper Music (2000) version is in great quality, albeit incomplete due to the editing done (i.e. Saville Row). The major, (and perhaps only) reason to obtain this CD is for the Warners Bros. mix that was done once the master tapes were sent to the USA. The Warner Bros. mix is properly banded with all the studio chatter edited out. It sounds like a proper album, and not a collection of outtakes. The Warner Bros. mix remains unreleased and is only available on this bootleg release. Listening all these years later, I think this is my favorite Badfinger album, closely followed by "Wish You Were Here". The songs are more consistent than any other Badfinger album, even with "Rockin' Machine" on the album. Having Chris Thomas produce it would have helped, but that is nit picking as it is generally well produced album. The Warners Bros. mix in particular is excellent, and is of particular importance as this is the mix that has not been booted before. The Apple mix is the one that has made it to boots before, but it has always been overloaded. This time there is less noise and the level of the music doesn't jump out and punch you in the face. Like the first Brilliant Road release, this disc also contains extensive liner notes, artwork and an individually numbered limited edition box. The scan featured above is of the limited edition box that holds the jewel case, covers, disc and extensive liner notes. The liner notes exhibit that many hours of listening time have been spent comparing the mixes, performances and sound of each version. Song lyrics for each track are also featured, something that hasn't appeared for any previous Badfinger release, (ignoring Japanese reissues and solo discs). The front cover of the booklet, (of which there are twelve pages!) features a Warner Bros. record label, (circa mid 70's) that is a promotional copy of the "Head First" album. Can this be true? Were promo copies of the album made after the January Warners Bros. mixes? A personal highlight for me is the Warners Bros. mix for "Back Again". This performance alone makes the purchase worthwhile. ¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤ Copyright İ Badfinger Web Ring / Badfingerlinks.com.
