To me this is a soundboard, especially as the crowd noise is well and truly in the background. There are not too many soundboard recordings circulating among collectors, or released onto disc from the Joey/Tommy versions of Badfinger from 1979 to 1981. This is one however, and it isn't too bad. It is obvious the guys are pushing the (then) new album, "Airwaves". The first five songs are renditions from that album. Joey, after "Love Is Gonna Come At Last" beseeches the crowd to buy the album. Unforunately they didn't. The disc opens up part of the way through "Look Out California", either meaning that the opening was missed by the person recording the show, or that the copy used to master this CD is a not complete copy of the master tape. It is fair to say that there are some musically 'off key' moments at the start of the show, especially for the "Airwaves" tracks. As the band warms up though and settles into the more traditional Badfinger material the band settles down. "Suitcase" is the first example where the performance doesn't sound 'forced'. However, there are times between songs when speaking to the audience that band members do sound as if they are 'coked up to the eyeballs' (my opinion only). The rest of the show really could have come from any number of classic Badfinger performances from 1972-1974. "Without You" for me is the show highlight, even if the synthersiser is a bit over the top. The inclusion of keyboards to Badfinger's show does provide a glimpse of how the 1974 tour may have sounded with Bob Jackson. The rest of the show is generally great, quite enjoyable, and worth the purchase of the disc, despite some tape dropouts later in the disc. So this beggars the question..... Do I need this disc? Well it really depends on whether you like Badfinger. :-) I have noted it freely available on a Beatles binary newsgroup, so if you have the bandwidth grab it. Otherwise I would recommend a letter writing campaign to the Evans estate and to Joey and Kathie to see if a limited edition CD could be released to fans. They have nothing to lose, just so long as an agreement suitable to all parties can be negotiated. I will leave that for you (the eager fan) to arrange. ¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤~¤ Copyright İ Badfinger Web Ring / Badfingerlinks.com.
